Book Review, Video teaser and Giveaway: Love, in English by Karina Halle

He’s thirty-eight. I’m twenty-three.
He speaks Spanish. I speak English.
He lives in Spain. I live in Canada.
He dresses in thousand-dollar suits. I’m covered in tattoos.
He’s married and has a five-year old daughter. I’m single and can’t commit to anyone or anything.
Until now.Because when they say you can’t choose who you fall in love with, boy ain’t that the f*#king truth.
To a restless dreamer like Vera Miles, it sounded like the experience of a lifetime. Instead of spending her summer interning for her astronomy major, she would fly to Spain where she’d spend a few weeks teaching conversational English to businessmen and women, all while enjoying free room and board at an isolated resort. But while Vera expected to get a tan, meet new people and stuff herself with wine and paella, she never expected to fall in love.
Mateo Casalles is unlike anyone Vera has ever known, let alone anyone she’s usually attracted to. While Vera is a pierced and tatted free spirit with a love for music and freedom, Mateo is a successful businessman from Madrid, all sharp suits and cocky Latino charm. Yet, as the weeks go on, the two grow increasingly close and their relationship changes from purely platonic to something…more.
Something that makes Vera feel alive for the first time.
Something that can never, ever be.
Or so she thinks

“No one ever said this would be easy, the hard things are worth it. Hang in ther.”

Please excuse me while I pick myself up off the floor from my hysterical weeping!
WONDERFUL!!!! I kind of want to do this whole review with EXCLAMATION MARKS!!! But that’s a bit obnoxious so pretend there are a slew of exclamation marks after every sentence. Love, in English is a bundle of joy and pain that reminds me why I love contemporary novels so much. I’d be surprised if you don’t smile and cry at the same time while reading this book. It will touch you to the core; it will open your mind to a lot of things, it’s sweet, it’s bitter, just plain good!

“You’re married.”
“It’s over.”
“I want you, I wanted you from the very beginning, I just never thought it would be possible.”
“Because it’s not possible.”
“You don’t know that.
“You’re married. I cannot be the other woman!”
“You already are the other woman!”

I feel like I have to be so careful with my words because I don’t want to give anything away, especially for those of you who have yet to begin this book. One major strength of this story was Karina Halle’s ability to take an imperfect and broken world of Vera and Mateo, two vastly different cultures collided and bring them together. Were things always easy? No. Was there always harmony? Certainly not. All of the differences and struggles definitely made the story richer and more interesting. Ms. Halle made sure everything was handled very realistically, without anything being too easy or convenient. I greatly admire this because she trusted her characters’ intelligence to work through any chaotic situation she laid before them.

“Why couldn’t he have been single? Why couldn’t I have been older, or he younger, or why couldn’t I have met him in another point in time?”
“I tried not to. I tried to hold it in. But a month’s worth of second-guessing and anguish had built up. It was hard to leave that field.
“But we had to. We both knew we had to.
We were back to being separate. Our feelings back to being hidden.
Now we were a secret.
And we were running out of time.””

It was absolutely heart wrenching to read as Vera tried to escape from her feelings and battle between what’s right and wrong. How she managed to keep it together was beyond me. It is a very difficult situation to be at where you are only left with one choice…leave.

“Design your own universe, make your own stars, write your own stories, and create your own destiny.”

Perhaps the most difficult aspect of Love, in English is wanting to rush to find out what happens and how the story ends, but grappling with the fact that after you’ve turned that final page…it’s all over. It’s the worst dilemma a reader can be faced with. But let me reiterate that you should soak it all up, enjoy the journey, and let your heart experience all the emotions. Karina Halle’s work deserves to be appreciated.
Ultimately, the multiple layers and story lines that were woven throughout made this book awesome. It was about dealing with life changes, your choices and the decisions you have to make. It was about finding the right love at the wrong time. It was about growing up and learning how to deal with all the consequences of life.
If you are prepared to embrace the drama, Love, in English is worth giving a shot. Pick it up now! You’ll be embracing a book overflowing with love, life lessons, intermingled story lines and so much more!
With her USA Today Bestselling The Artists Trilogy published by Grand Central Publishing, numerous foreign publication deals, and self-publishing success with her Experiment in Terror series, Vancouver-born Karina Halle is a true example of the term “Hybrid Author.” Though her books showcase her love of all things dark, sexy and edgy, she’s a closet romantic at heart and strives to give her characters a HEA…whenever possible.

Blog Tour Review & Giveaways: Taint by S.L. Jennings

Title: Taint
Author: S.L Jennings
Release Date: May 20, 2014

Right now, you’re probably asking yourself two things:

Who am I?
And, what the hell are you doing here?
Let’s start with the most obvious question, shall we?
You’re here, ladies, because you can’t f*ck.
Oh, stop it. Don’t cringe. No one under the age of 80 clutches their pearls.
You might as well get used to it, because for the next six weeks, you’re going to hear that word a lot.
And you’re going to say it a lot.
Go ahead, try it out on your tongue.
F*ck. F***ck.
Ok, good. Now where were we?
If you enrolled yourself in this program then you are wholly aware that you’re a lousy lay. Good for you. Admitting it is half the battle.
For those of you that have been sent here by your husband or significant other, dry your tears and get over it. You’ve been given a gift, ladies. The gift of mind-blowing, wall-climbing, multiple-orgasm-inducing sex. You have the opportunity to f*ck like a porn star. And I guarantee, you will when I’m done with you.
And who am I?
Well, for the next six weeks, I will be your lover, your teacher, your best friend, and your worst enemy. Your every-f*cking-thing. I’m the one who is going to save your relationship and your sex life.
I am Justice Drake.
And I turn housewives into whores.
Now…who’s first?

v. taint-ed, taint-ing, taints
1. To corrupt morally.
2. To sully or tarnish (a person’s name, reputation, etc.)
1. a defect ot flaw
2. an infecting touch, influence or tinge.

Sexy does not equate good sex. More often than not, this theory hold true. If it didn’t, I wouldn’t be in business. And let me tell you, business is good, Very good.

Wow!!! Just WOW! Reading the blurb for this story had me curious and the opening lines had me settling back ready to enjoy a fun read.

“You suck at sex. You don’t satisfy your husband sexually, which is why he wants to cheat on you, if he hasn’t alredy. You may be a fantastic wife, mother, homemaker, whatever, but you are a lousy lover.”

Yeah, with to-the-point language like that, how could this be anything but highly amusing?
The characters in TAINT are remarkably well written.
Justice Drake, a life coach who specializes in one specific department. SEX.

“My business is sex. I instruct sex. I live and breathe sex. And I need it, just like their duplicitous husbands.”

Eleven women have entered the course, desperately wanted to reconnect with their husbands; husbands who have broken their vows to satisfy sexual deviances from other women. They seek Justice Drakes’ expertise to learn the art of seduction, on how to improve their sex lives and ultimately their relationships.
JD is a very sensual man. But he knows how to play his business. He firmly follows his principles and remains professional at all times.

“Never get emotionally vested in client.
Never pressure or persuade them, it has to be their choice.
And never, ever apologize for my unconventional technique, as cruel or brash as it may seem.”

Everything seems to be going well, until he meets his perfect match. Allison Elliot-Carr. Daughter of  the owner and CEO of one of the largest investment banks in the world. Married to one of the most influential personality in the society and her father’s golden boy. Justice thinks he knows everything about her. But as Allison spends time with him in the Oasis, he learned that that there is more to Allison that just a pretty face and a big fat wallet.

“I look at her – really look at her – she’s beautiful – they all are – but Allsion is flawless. The fact that she hasn’t tried to hide a little piece of herself that society would deem blemished, intrigues me. Shit, it makes her kind of badass.
I like it. Can’t Stop. The Word. Vomit
Day-fucking-One. Im so screwed.”

Justice and Allison’s story is full of emotions and takes readers on a great ride. I was seriously drawn into their story right from the start. This fast paced story keeps you engaged all the way to the end. I enjoyed watching JD fight to regain himself and fight for the love that he longs for. The two make a wonderful couple and I enjoyed watching their relationship begin to take shape. Each declaration of love, each touch, each kiss, helps cement their hearts and souls together. JD is more than willing to fight for Allison and he pushes her just enough to help him through it all and make her realize that they belong together. But things are not as easy as it seems.

“No matter how I feel about Ally and the future that we never ever have, I can’t change who I am. And who I am is not Ally’s husband.”

I enjoyed the tension this book opened up with. Their dialogues add to the tension and realism of the situation. I feel as if the scenes that S.L. Jennings wrote could easily have been how people could react in such circumstances. Then the after-effects of such an emotional scene also seemed to roll on in a logical and wonderfully emotional manner. Ms. Jennings has a real flair for action packed, tension filled romance. I really felt for both JD and Ally, for the complexities of their situation and the massive ball of emotions they are. Complex, multi-layered characters are a soft spot of mine and this book really filled that need for me.

“Welcome to the real game of Life, where we’re all players, but one ever truly wins.”

I was stunned by some of the revelations! I so wasn’t expecting that but it was fabulous! The writing is seamless, the characters sexy and the location pulls you into the story. I love the emphasis that Syreeta put on the things that really matter in order to have a successful marriage and the wonderful ways in which she portrayed them. I felt as if I knew each character and suffered as well as celebrated along with them. Justice and Allison’s passionate moments were exceptionally hot, yet extremely loving at the same time.
This is a well-cooked story and sure to appeal to many readers. What’s not to love? A story with strong characters and interesting plot, with plenty of chemistry and raunchy sex and enough good ingredients I think plenty of people should give it a taste. What can I say? It worked for me.
Most known for her starring role in a popular sitcom as a child, S.L. Jennings went on to earn her law degree from Harvard at the young age of 16. While studying for the bar exam and recording her debut hit album, she also won the Nobel Prize for her groundbreaking invention of calorie-free wine. When she isn’t conquering the seas in her yacht or flying her Gulfstream, she likes to spin elaborate webs of lies and has even documented a few of these said falsehoods.

In hindsight, Michelle never should have gotten tangled up with the aspiring guitarist in the first place. In high school, Devlin was a sweet, shy geek who’d had a crush on her, but when he’d found the courage to ask her to Prom, she’d turned him down flat. In hindsight, she should have worried more about the quality of the boy than her reputation with the popular crowd. But this isn’t high school anymore. At her ten year class reunion, Michelle finds her once popular crowd lacking, but finds both the man who broke her heart and the one she once rejected irresistibly sexy. She wants them. Both of them. And they want her any way—every way—they can have her. Can she resist either man? Does she even want to try?

New York Times bestselling author Nicole Edwards is heating things up with Boots Optional, a sexy new ménage novella which is the first book in a hot new series called Dead Heat Ranch
Grace Lambert is familiar with hard work, long days, and handsome cowboys. She’s been working for her family’s dude ranch since she was old enough to ride a horse and she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty. What she is afraid of is the heat that’s been generating between her and not one, but two sexy cowboys who’ve set their sights on her. And each other. Grant Kingsley and Lane Miller have both had their eyes on Gracie for years, but the feisty cowgirl has managed to keep them at bay. As far as they are concerned, cowboys don’t give up, and neither of them is ready to give up just yet. Not on her and not on the heat that transpires between the two of them. Find out what happens when the sultry Texas nights get as hot as the fierce Texas days.
New York Times bestselling author Cherrie Lynn gets it hot in here with SHAMELESS

But when she overhears a couple having a passionate interlude on the balcony above her one night, she can’t get the man’s sultry voice out of her mind. Especially when she figures out exactly who that man is… Cameron Moore always had an eye on his best friend’s little sister but considered her strictly off limits, choosing to satisfy his lust elsewhere. Now Meri seems to want to annihilate every wall Cam’s put up against her. The beach is hot, the drinks are cold, Meredith is irresistible, and something has to give. Will it only be the walls between them, or their hearts as well?
New York Times Bestselling Author Kristen Proby brings you PLAYING WITH FIRE, a ménage novella.
Bailey Whitworth is a charity event organizer and a woman exploring her sexuality. Kevin Welling and Gray McDermitt are firefighters and best friends who share everything. Bailey always knew her sexual appetites were “different”, but she had no idea that she could fall in love with two men at once. What will she do when she has to choose between them? Or will she have to choose at all?
From USA Today bestselling author, Lainey Reese comes Guarding Nadia
When Nadia Dixon walked into the offices of CJ Investigations, the last thing she expected to find were men who looked more like GQ models than bodyguards. It was desperation that brought her to their door however and she prayed that the two sex gods were more than just pretty faces. Caleb and Jonas had started their security firm together after leaving the Secret Service. They had the lethal skill and training to safeguard anyone, including the gorgeous erotic author. Considering her stunning beauty, alluring sensuality and decadent profession, the only wonder was that she had drawn out just one obsessed fan. After hearing Nadia’s story and seeing for themselves the threat that she was under, they knew they could keep her safe from any stalker. Their only worry…who was going to keep her safe from them?
“You guys did great,” she insists. “I saw the final numbers. How do you stay in such good shape?”
“It’s the job,” Kevin replies. “It’s hard work. Keeps us in shape.”
“Some of us have to work harder than others,” I add. Kevin is naturally fit and lean, while I have to work out every day to stay in this shape.
“Well, whatever you’re doing, it’s working for you,” she replies and then slaps her hand over her mouth in mortification. I grin and take a sip of my beer. Kev’s right, she’s interested.
Maybe this won’t be as difficult as we thought.
“We carry a lot of equipment,” Kev continues, and I can see by the humor in his eyes that he has a plan up his sleeve. “Hoses, gear, people.” He loops his arms under her legs and back and lifts her off the stool, takes her spot and settles her on his lap facing me, so she sandwiched between us. Her arms are wrapped around his shoulders and she’s laughing.
“You just haul people around,” she says dryly.
“Haven’t you heard? We carry damsels in distress out of burning buildings all the time.” Kevin grins down at her then over at me. “Right?”
“Almost every day,” I lie easily, playing the game, but Kevin isn’t fooling her. She just laughs moves to stand but Kev tightens his hold on her, keeping her in place.
“You’re fine right here,” he says.
She glances uncertainly between us, then picks her drink up and downs the rest of it.
“Another?” Kevin asks.
“No,” I reply before Bailey can open her mouth. I shake my head but keep my eyes on Bailey’s bright blue ones. “I think she’s had enough.”
“You’re right, I should probably go home.” She opens her purse and digs around for a moment, but I grip her chin in my fingers and lean in, plant my lips over hers and kiss her long and slow, stealing the breath right out of her. She moans as the tension leaves her and she sags against Kevin. I feel him wrap his arms around her middle, anchoring her as she melts into the kiss, opening her mouth to me sweetly.
She tastes like strawberries and heaven. Before I get too carried away, I back slowly away and watch in fascination as her eyes flutter open and she stares at me with her jaw dropped.
As if she realizes what she just did, and that she might have offended Kevin, she glances back at him.
“I’m sorr…”
Before she can finish, Kev catches her chin in his palm and guides her lips to his, kissing her just as long and just as sweetly, making her moan into his lips.
My dick throbs behind the fly of my jeans as I link my fingers through hers and hold onto her as she rides out the kiss. At last, Kev backs away and smiles smugly down at her.
She glances back and forth between both of us, licks her lips and whispers, “Holy shit.”
“I think it’s time we took you home,” I reply with a wide smile. “What do you think, Kev?”
“Past time,” he agrees and stands with Bailey still safe in his arms. “Let’s go.”

Book Review: Off the Record by K.A. Linde

Liz Dougherty has no idea that a single question is about to change her life.
Her first big reporting assignment for her North Carolina college newspaper has her covering a state senator’s impromptu press conference. Brady Maxwell may have everything it takes to be a politician—a winning pedigree, devastating good looks, a body made to wear suits—but his politics rub Liz the wrong way. When Liz’s hard-hitting question catches the upstart senator off-guard, it impresses Hayden Lane, Liz’s editor who feels she’s headed for a promising career as a reporter.
But Liz is also headed into a secret romance with Brady that could destroy both their ambitions. Though he’s a bachelor, potential voters might frown on Brady cozying up to a reporter. And Liz isn’t sure sneaking around is enough for her—especially when things between her and Hayden might be less platonic than she thought.
K.A. Linde’s Record series begins with a sleek, sexy, and smart venture into a high-stakes political campaign and an even higher-stakes affair that, in the end, will leave you wanting more with one of Linde’s gripping cliffhangers.
Brady Maxwell! BRADY MAXWELL!!! Holy crap! I have never wanted to throw my hat into the political ring but if Maxwell is on the ballot sign me up! In true Linde fashion I am torn between two men, questioning my beliefs, and holding on for dear life. I will deem little Ms. Linde “The Queen of Cliffhangers”. I will go as far as to say she is probably laughing at us all! *insert evil villainous laugh here*

“I’m giving you what I can give you, and I’m telling you in advance that you might get hurt. But it’s worth it to take the risk. I can damn well promise you that it’s worth it.”

Who can resist a beautiful man packaged in tailored made suit? Ummm not me! Brady Maxwell oozes sex, power, and demands attention. What more could a girl want? Liz is a smart cookie. Young, green, and ready to hit the pavement running. Stopped in her reporter tracks, she is charmed with one look and both lives are forever changed.

“Secrets were going to be her downfall. Her secrets now had secrets. “

Can one live a life dripping in secrets? Secrets covering secrets? Truth is lost in the middle of a lust covered affair. Both Liz and Maxwell crave one another, every spare moment drawn together via an invisible bond. Liz is torn between her very public life as a reporter and private desire for Maxwell.

“So…that’s it then? You’re choosing the campaign.”
“It’s never been a choice. I’m stubborn. I want both.”

What would you do? We are told not to play with fire because in the end we will burn, however the mesmerizing beauty of the flame and the warning sensation draw you in. Brady Maxwell’s fire is just as powerful, and Liz has a front row seat for the action. The stakes are high for both. Will love win the majority vote?

If I was voting, K.A Linde would be high on my top authors list. Off the Record adds to K.A Linde already impressive book list. After the Avoiding series, Off the Record has taken love triangle to a whole new level. Its one thing to compete with another person but when you find the tip of triangle is occupied by political madness, “love triangle” takes on a whole new meaning. One click Off the Record for what you know K.A. Linde can offer and stay for Maxwell’s fire, charm, million dollar smile.

K.A. Linde graduated with her Masters in political science from the University of Georgia in 2012. She also has a bachelors in political science and philosophy. She wrote her the Avoiding Series while struggling through advanced statistical modeling and writing her thesis. She enjoys dancing and writing novels that keep you guessing until the very end.

She currently resides in Georgia with her boyfriend and two puppies, Lucy and Riker.

Book Review and Excerpt: Phenomenal X by Michelle Valentine

Title: Phenomenal X
Author: Michelle A. Valentine

From the mean streets of Detroit rises the newest superstar of professional wrestling, Xavier Cold, better known as Phenomenal X. His muscular physique makes men cower before him and woman lose their minds with desire.
Anna Cortez is fresh out of college and naive to the harsh realities of the real world. Tired of living under the thumb of her conservative family, she defies them when she accepts a job as the assistant to wrestling’s most notorious bad-boy. Phenomenal X has an animalistic nature that even good girl Anna finds hard to resist.
One night forced to share a bed in a sold-out hotel, lines blur between them and they quickly learn that one lustful night changes everything and neither one of them will ever be the same.

Growing up I was in LOVE with the WWF. My cousin and would pretend we were wrestlers, jump off of anything that was climbable, and broke a lot of stuff in the process. Since then we have both grown up a lot and are less violent. My love for the sport disappeared but I must say that after reading this book I am down for an old fashion living room match! I may be paying said cousin a call very soon!

“That’s because you don’t know me. Believe me, beautiful, I’m bad fucking news. A nice girl like you should run away from me as quick as you can.”

Epic in every sense of the word, X is a treat for the mind and the eye. Anna’s chance encounter with this mass of man candy was a moment nether would forget. There are the moments in your life where you connect on a level far greater than the mind could ever understand. Anna and X’s flight to the Motor City will forever change them both. Flying with more baggage them anyone person can handle the spark they mutually discover has taken hold in a way nether will ever forget.

“We all have things that haunt us – things we’d like to forget. The key is not allow them to get in the way of out happiness.”

Strikingly real, X’s story is painful to read. Overcoming a past filled with demons, X was able to find a sliver of hope. We are products of our environment and X is no different. Reading his POV of view was hard to swallow.

“Not everyone’s meant to have happiness, Anna. Some of us are meant for the dark.”

X soon learns that even in our darkest moments, love is the light needed to guide you home. Anna becomes his addiction – mind, body, and soul. Anna is not exempt in this beat down match of love. Her own personal struggle weighs heavy on her heart and her mind. Both flawed, they are working together to find their own personal perfection.
An entertaining read, Phenomenal X gave me exactly what I look for in a Michelle Valentine book. Stage or ring, guitar or fist, no matter the venue you are promised hot men, angst, and one hell of a good time. I won’t lie the cliffhanger will sting. The evil villain in this story will have you holding your poster board signs high and screaming your dislike at the top of your lungs. No fear I have complete and utter confidence in our little pint size Valentine! When love is against the ropes I know she will deliver us a win before the count is complete. Stay tuned it just go good…

Just then I notice an extremely tall, broad-shouldered man wearing jeans and a blue button-down shirt, with his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, board the plane. Even with his shirt on I can tell he’s all muscle underneath it. The definition in his chest and arms is undeniable as the fabric strains against his pecs and biceps. Intricate tattoos cover every inch of exposed flesh on his arms, and I immediately know he’s the kind of guy my mother always warned me about—which does nothing to decrease his appeal.
I bite my lip as my eyes scan further up and take in the dark hair on his head. It’s got a little bit of length to it and is styled to messy perfection. His strong jawline has some light stubble, like he forgot to shave this morning, and the fact that his nose isn’t perfectly straight—indicating it’s been broken a time or two—only adds to his rugged good looks. The way he carries himself, chin up with a daring expression, exudes confidence. Everything about him says he doesn’t take crap from anyone, which is a highly attractive feature in a man. And that body…yowza! It’s absolutely delicious and belongs on the cover of a magazine. It’s designed for masses of women to enjoy devouring with their eyes because in the flesh, that’s exactly what I’m doing.
And I’m loving every minute of it.
My heart pauses for a beat the moment this man locks eyes with me. When I don’t immediately turn away, a slight hint of a smile plays at the corner of his full lips. Briefly, I’m mesmerized, and then realize I’m still thinking about his body, and I’m biting my lip.
He winks at me like he knows exactly what’s on my mind before he slides into an empty row of seats in first class. A short, thin man with a mullet and a beard takes the aisle seat next to him.
I lean my head back against the seat and sigh, feeling the heat in my cheeks. That man is dangerously sexy and way out of my league. .

Promo Blitz: Blissful Surrender by BJ Harvey (Excerpt, Dreamcast & Giveaways)

Title: Blissful Surrender ( Bliss #3)
Author: BJ Harvey

This is a story of Sean Miller, a dom that will have your panties diving for cover with an eyebrow quirk. That will have even the strongest woman dropping to their knees in submission with a piercing stare, and Samantha Richards, a female cop who’s tough, seemingly impenetrable shell is strong enough to resist everyone except the one man it was build up to protect her against.
**Disclaimer – If you thought the first two Bliss books were hot, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Creative use of handcuffs, batons, a club scene you have to read to believe, and a tough as nails dominant who is blindsided by the one woman strong enough to threaten his resolve not to let his past dictate his future.**
Like the other books in the Bliss series, this book can be read as a stand alone. There are common characters in the books but it is not necessary to read the first two books in the series to read this one.

From my place in my small kitchen, I start hearing a weird vibrating type noise coming from my bedroom. I have a moment of sheer horror flash before my eyes then I remember that
a) I live alone.
b) I’m a thirty-two year old woman, so who the fuck cares that I have three vibrators, one vibrating egg, and a vibrating pair of underwear that Helen bought me on a dare.
c) I didn’t use my sex toy collection last night because I fell asleep on the couch in the middle of Castle.
d) The noise is not going away by me sitting here considering all the different vibrating toys I have in my top right drawer.
Right …
I jump up and run into my bedroom just as the noise stops. What the fuck! Now I’ll never know. I scan my room for anything suspicious and come up empty.
Then the noise starts again. I drop to my hands and knees, crawling around looking for the source of the ghost vibration, and giggling because now I’m thinking of what happens to sex toys after they die.
Helen would have a field day with this conversation.
I realize the sound is coming from my bed, so pulling back the comforter to an empty bed, I lift my pillows to find my phone vibrating like a kid at Christmas. I lunge for the phone and roll over onto my back at the same time, feeling pretty good about my ability to answer the call and do a side roll at the same time.

Girls say I’m a walking, talking sex god. Guys call me Hollywood because my life is golden.
It’s not.
But, ESPN did rank me as a four star recruit, calling me one of the best defensive players since Briarcrest Academy opened its esteemed doors. So yeah, with football and a stellar GPA, my future seemed good.
Then Dovey Beckham shows up in her short skirts and ballet shoes. Driving me insane. Making me want to beg for her attention.
But that wouldn’t happen, because Cuba Hudson didn’t beg for anything.
She walked around BA like she owned the place, and most days she looked right through me…the one girl I couldn’t have.
So, of course, I made it my mission to claim her, to put her notch on my bedpost.
Because no girl can resist the Heartbreaker of BA.
But I never planned on destroying her.
I never planned on wrecking the one thing that could save me.
Welcome to Briarcrest Academy, where wicked love begins…and ends.
“Two things about me: I play football—and girls.” –Cuba Hudson
I wanted the gorgeous girl in the window.
More specifically, I wanted the dark-haired girl dancing inside the Symthe Arts Building as I stood outside on the twenty yard line at football practice, fixated on her when I should have been focused on the line of scrimmage. I adjusted my helmet and squinted through the afternoon Dallas sun.
Did I know her?
Movement from other players on the field pulled me back. Good thing. As defensive end, it was my job to put the screws to or sack the quarterback as soon as the ball snapped. But I was off today. Probably because I knew I had a shit ton of homework waiting for me at home. With my dream of being a doctor and getting into a good school, being on top of my game in class was important as well. Briarcrest Academy was one of the top-rated private schools in the country, making expectations here high.
Just like every eighteen-year-old kid out there, I had stresses.
But I did have more than the average. I had a sick mom.
But those thoughts faded when I looked back at the window and watched the girl run and then leap in the air, her body doing some kind of crazy in-the-air-leg-split-thing. Damn. She’d gotten at least four feet off the ground.
Then, after landing on her feet light as a feather, she danced away from my view. I waited for her to come back, wanting to check out her toned muscles again, especially her tight ass. And then I randomly wondered if her tits were small. Weren’t all dancers? Yeah. But still, she looked—
“Pay attention, Hudson!” Coach Howe yelled at me.
Fuck. Caught.
I automatically stiffened and tightened my defensive stance, running my eyes across the offensive line, waiting for the play. But the quarterback was pussy-footing around still undecided if they were gonna run or pass. Whatever. Matt the Quarterback was a complete jack ass. I ate guys like him for lunch which wasn’t hard when you’re tall and fast like me.
I got bored.
Out of my peripheral vision, I caught a flash of pink dashing past the window.
She was back.
And like I was addicted to her, my eyes drifted to the building again, one part baffled by the fascination, the other part wanting to get another glimpse of her long legs. As I watched, she adjusted her ponytail as she laughed up at her ballet partner—who was a dude. Crazzzy. Yeah, you’d think he’d be all feminine and shit, but he wasn’t. Nope. Dude looked buff, like he could bench press a school bus.
Something about the girl called to me. Yeah, it was probably that short skirt she wore. I pictured slipping my hand underneath it to her panties. Her core would be hot, on fire for me, of course, and I’d ease my finger inside her wet—
Bam! I took a hard hit from Tank Carson, an All District offensive guard I routinely ran circles around in practice. He might be big, but I was quick and smart and had more moves than a freaking octopus. So the chance to plant my distracted ass on the turf was an early Christmas present for him. That’s what I get for letting some piece of ass get in my game, even if it was practice.
And so. My unprepared body flew through the air with 290 pounds of Tank on top of it. My head followed my body and hit the turf, the contact reverberating inside my helmet and then everything went black…

The first time it happened, it seemed like an impossible miracle. Bills were piling up, adding up to more money than I could ever make. Mom's hospital bills. My baby brother's tuition. My tuition. Rent. Electricity. All of it on my shoulders. And I had just lost my job. There was no hope, no money in my account, no work to be found. And then, just when I thought all hope was lost, I found an envelope in the mail. No return address. My name on the front, my address. Inside was a check, made out to me, in the amount of ten thousand dollars. Enough to pay the bills and leave me some left over to live on until I found a job. Enough to let me focus on classes. There was no name on the check, just "VRI Inc.," and a post office box address for somewhere in the city. No hint of identity or reason for the check or anything. No mention of repayment, interest, nothing…except a single word, on the notes line: "You." Just those three letters.

If you receive a mysterious check, for enough money to erase all your worries, would you cash it?

I did.

The next month, I received another check, again from VRI Incorporated. It too contained a single word: "belong."

A third check, the next month. This time, two words. Four letters. "To me."

The checks kept coming. The notes stopped. Ten thousand dollars, every month. A girl gets used to that, real quick. It let me pay the bills without going into debt. Let me keep my baby brother in school and Mom's hospice care paid for. How do you turn down what seems like free money, when you're desperate? You don't. I didn't.

And then, after a year, there was a knock on my door. A sleek black limousine sat on the curb in front of my house. A driver stood in front of me, and he spoke six words: "It's time to pay your debt."

Would you have gotten in?

I did.

It turns out $120,000 doesn't come free.
