Most women have a wish list when it comes to what kind of man they want to date. JC Mathews used a strict set of guidelines as a safety net to keep herself out of trouble and out of love.
On hiatus from the bright lights and speculative gazes of her career in the fashion industry, JC lets her guard down…only to the wrong man. After escaping Italy and the hands of her abuser, she returns to Malibu to recover. The last thing she expects to find is a large, gorgeous intruder swimming naked in her pool.
Reed Rider left Texas and his broken heart behind in order to settle his aunt’s affairs after her death. Seeking refuge from the California heat for a midnight swim in his neighbor’s backyard, he never expects to find a nude silhouette of a long-haired beauty standing at the water’s edge.
As their passion ignites and the pages of JC’s rulebook fade to grey, she unlocks her guarded heart to begin a new chapter in her life. When hidden truths are exposed and secrets unravel, will they survive the threats from their broken pasts?

Rating: ★★★★★

Every once in a while a series comes along that just leaves a smile on your soul, The Mathews Family Series by Beverly Preston does just that. All of these books can be read as stand alones, but their stories do intertwine. I’ve been a fan of Beverly’s since book one. She’s got an amazing knack for making you feel like you’re one of the family. Her word choices and vivid imagery have you traveling to all of the places she writes about, you’re there with the characters for every step. Never has a series made me appreciate my life and my family the way that this one has. I have always been a proponent of everything happens for a reason, and her books simply solidified that for me.
In Surviving Broken, the fourth book and my favorite by far, the gang comes full circle. This installment focuses on the spitfire that is JC. This is her story, and man what a story. I will warn you, there is some tough subject matter in this book but Beverly handles it with perfect decorum. One scene is very difficult to sit through, but honestly, not one word could have been changed. It needed to be said just the way it played out. Perfectly. In walks Reed Rider… what can be said about him? Dreamy southern gentleman with class, wearing a good ‘ole pair of Levi’s. Swoon. Reed’s life hasn’t been a bowl of peaches. Together Reed and JC learn to trust, not only helping each other heal, but finding an amazing love story along the way. You can’t help but adore this couple and the journey they take you on.
When I finished this book I let out an audible sigh through my happy tears and smile. The ending was amazingly heartfelt and poignant. Beverly put pieces together I hadn’t even noticed were missing. The unconditional love of a family and what makes a family a unit, was beautifully orchestrated in the perfect final act. If there is such a thing as a perfect moment, this was it. It simply doesn’t get any better.

“Sometimes you have to go through hell to find your heaven.”

NEVER BEFORE SEEN EXCERPT

Their stare connected sending a tickling sensation down her spine. Tracy’s gaze drifted over his recklessly handsome features, hidden behind an intricate black mask. His light grey eyes swallowed her whole, the thick rim of ebony surrounding the cloudy irises like the calm in the eye of a storm.
Subconsciously, Tracy raised her fingers, touching them to her mask. His gape never blinking or shifting from her face. Turning away, she wondered if he knew her true identity.
A shivered rippled through her, feeling his soft lips press against her jaw. His scent, warm and spicy, surrounded her as he moved to the other cheek.
“Ciao.” His eyes lowered to the flesh on her arm standing at attention on full display. “I was going to point out the beauty of your striking blue eyes, but your exquisiteness…how you say…umm…takes my thoughts away.”
Tracy’s brow arched and a smile radiated across her face, holding back a laugh.
“That’s a new one.” JC snickered from over his shoulder in a mocking tone. “Speechless, Vin. That’s the word you’re looking for.”
“Si`. Speechless.” There was no change in his expression, just an intent stare full of unapologetic charm.
“Good luck with that.” JC’s face verged on a new shade of red. “I’ll be at the bar.”
Neither spoke momentarily. Vin’s eyes held, lingering over her face as if she were a fine piece of art hanging in a museum. Another surge of heat raced through each limb and every nerve ending in between. Sharp features accentuated his square jaw, the trimmed beard only added to his unpolished sexiness.
“Ouzo is the spirit of Greece, but you should drink it carefully and slowly.” Reaching around her, he retrieved two glasses of red wine from the ledge of the wall. “Greek men liken it to the seduction of a woman.”
Tracy raised her brow in question.
“Ouzo, like the love a woman, sneaks up on you.”
Oh he is good.
“But you are not Greek. You’re Italian? Yes?”
“Si`.” He extended a glass, holding it between them. “Italian men believe women are like a fine wine. They should be savored, and consumed ever so slowly, enjoying each precious sip.”

Mother’s Day Special, Excerpt from No More Wasted by Beverly Preston

“It’s okay. You don’t have to apologize.’ Tears of appreciation welled in Tess’ eyes. “For the record, I know it was a huge sacrifice for you to move back home after your dad died. You’ll never know how much it meant to me.”

“I wanted to come home . It was really hard for us to see you in so much pain.” Tracy pulled her mom into an embrace. “I don’t want you to get hurt. He better not screw you over.” Tracy states stiffly, inconspicuously wiping her own tears.

Glancing over her daughter’s shoulder, Tess watched JC give Tom a hug goodbye and then mosey to ward her.

JC rolled her eyes as she approached Tess and Tracy. “I can’t leave you delicate flowers alone for a minute. Did you two make up?

Tess and Tracy both nodded and wiped their tears. Tess motioned for both of them to get going. “Go have fun. Love you.”

Life isn’t about tomorrow ~ Life is about today

After losing her husband to a sudden heart attack, Tess Mathews escapes to Bora Bora to lay her husband and sorrow to rest. What she doesn’t expect is a new beginning.

Tom Clemmins is an A-list actor whose life revolves around work and an onslaught of women. He travels to Bora Bora for a much-needed break. Tom has a few ideas of how he’ll enjoy his vacation, but love isn’t one of them. Until he sees Tess.

Reserving a private shark-feeding excursion to scatter her husband’s ashes into the lagoon, Tess is furious when Mr. Hollywood bribes his way onto the boat, leaving her no other choice but to share the boat ride.

Tess is torn between tremendous guilt and zealous lust when their boat ride turns into a week full of romance and desire neither thought imaginable. Utterly smitten with a woman for the first time in his life, Tom casts his commitment phobia aside and whisks Tess off to Malibu where he introduces her as his “girlfriend” on the red carpet.

As the paparazzi besiege, can Tess survive the media blitz that ensues in order to find her second chance at love?
