Lipstick. Bright, red lipstick. Nothing but lipstick. Even though it’s against our faith to wear a color that screams of sexual promiscuity and deviant behavior, I’m not allowed to protest. But, I want to. So badly.
You see, there’s more to me than the braid that spills down my back. More to me than the layers of heavy fabric that maintain my modesty. And so much more than the oppressive wedding band that adorns my finger–the same band that each of my sister wives wear. So much more. To protest would be sinful. I must keep sweet, that is my duty.
So I’ll wear the lipstick. I’ll do as I’m told. And I’ll do my best to silence the resistance within me, to push him from my mind. If only my heart would do the same.

“I always knew I would share my husband…My existence is a lonely one. Lehi relieves that loneliness for the twenty-four hours when I pretend I’m the only one he lays with. And I do pretend. Every waking hour.”

Born into the polygamist life, Brinley is screaming to be heard. Surrounded by many but drowning in loneliness she is slowly learning that more love means less Brinley.

“The voices in my head started as disjointed whispers, so unconnected that they didn’t make any sense. But, those whispers were coming together, becoming more cohesive, clearer and louder in my head than ever before. From a whisper to a scream… I was waiting for the scream.”

Everything happens for a reason and in a life that prides its self in God’s words, Brinley is looking for her place in this world. Performance, Brinley’s daily performance is done through masked eyes until that mask is pulled away. Porter. The boy who stole more than a backpack has transformed her less than perfect world into one of more. More life, more love, more acceptance and more independence.
Porter sparked an already gas socked fire in Brinley. The key element on her path to self-discovery, Porter presented her with a world of possibilities. Teaching her that life on the opposite side of the wall, while not perfect, is worth the fight.

“And you’re not damned. If anybody’s damned to fucking hell, it’s the one everyone calls the Prophet. He’s a sick fuck who plays with your lives for his own twisted purposes. He controls every single one of your lives. It’s disgusting.”

Porter finds the home he has been lacking, while she finds the woman who was locked away. The compound becoming a jail with less perks and now Brinley is shedding her forced identity and learning about the uniqueness she had all along.

“I told you, you’re my heaven. If I burn when I die, that’s fine. I’m a selfish man and I want my heaven now.”

Melissa has proven that no matter the topic or genre you are promised no less than a well-crafted story with emotion, strong main characters and a cast of ancillary characters that scream, loudly, for their own story. Melissa has done her homework on this one. Diving deep into the polygamist lifestyle, she has presented an honest look into life in the compound. Wife Number Seven is a story of hope. The hope that one day you can find your own personal happiness. I am reminded of one of my favorite, non Melissa Brown quotes…

“You’ve always had the power my dear, you just had to learn it for yourself.” -Glinda The Good Witch of the North

Brinley, like Dorothy went on a journey in search of more and learned that the power to change is within. Along the way you will be guided by loved ones but in the end the power is your own. Porter guided her with smarts, courage, and a heart of gold. Their story is not a one easy but a life worth living never is.

Melissa Brown was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago. She attended the University of Illinois and is the mother of two fantastic kids. She’s an avid reader who enjoys making handmade gifts for her family and friends, as well as baking and painting. She speaks fluent movie quotes from the 1980s and ’90s.Her romance titles include Bouquet Toss, Champagne Toast, Picturing Perfect and Unwanted Stars. She is currently developing a Young Adult series called Sorority of Three.

Picturing Perfect by Melissa Brown

Life may not turn out like we planned, but sometimes that’s what makes it perfect…
Hadley Foster has always been a planner. But, since the age of nineteen, things haven’t exactly gone according to plan… not at all. And the changes continue to mount when a trip to Europe with her best friend starts a domino effect in all aspects of her life. Suddenly, the future she had envisioned for herself seems unlikely to happen. It’s time to, make a new plan… or accept the dominoes as they fall.
Jason Kelly has a great life. He’s a successful self-published writer who’s living his dreams. But, something is missing. Hadley Foster. Letting her slip through his fingers is one of his biggest regrets. Over time, he had to accept the idea of being without his first love as he watched her fall in love with someone else.
When circumstances bring Jason and Hadley back into one another’s lives, they’re forced to deal with their past, their present and the possibility of a future together

SPECIAL VALENTINE SCENE
WITH THE KELLY FAMILY

“Good job, little man.” I heard Jason say from down the hall. I’d been sequestered to our bedroom while he and Marty ‘prepared’ for Valentine’s Day. I heard rustling papers and plastic and couldn’t help but be intrigued. “Mommy’s gonna love this.”
I could hear the pride in his voice. My heart swelled in anticipation. Observing Jason and Marty interact would never get old.
“Mommy Vaaaa-tine.” Marty yelled from the living room.
“You’re blowing our cover,” Jason whispered with a laugh. “All right, all right. I guess you can join us on the couch, Mommy. We’re as ready as we’re gonna be.”
Quickly, I placed Jason’s gift in my pocket and walked toward the living room. When I rounded the hallway corner, I couldn’t help but gasp. Red streamers and white twinkle lights dangled from the ceiling. Small vases were placed around the shelves and countertops—each one filled with three flowers. One red, one white, one pink… each color representing a member of our family.
“You never cease to amaze me, Mr. Kelly.”
“Marty stayed up all night… he’s been anxious. Wanted to give you a proper Valentine’s Day.”
“Vaaa-tine,” my two year old little guy ran to my feet and extended his hand. A simple red heart, scribbled with white and pink was tucked between his pudgy little fingers.
“Thank you, sweetheart. I love it.”
Scooping Marty in my arms, I joined Jason on the couch, placing the little guy on my lap. It was obvious that Jason was doing his best to disguise a smile, but I could see right through him. “Marty stayed up all night, huh?”
He nodded emphatically, “Mmm hmm. I was just his grunt. He’s been bossing me around all morning.”
“It smells good,” I said, smelling the aroma of coffee and cinnamon coming from the kitchen. Marty hopped off my lap and returned to coloring at the coffee table.
“Fresh cinnamon rolls.”
“My favorite.”
“I know,” Jason said, placing a small kiss on my lips. “I have a confession to make.”
“What’s that?” I whispered, curious.
“I didn’t get you any flowers.”
I pressed the small red valentine to my chest, “This is all I need. Seriously.”
“That’s from your son. I have something else for you.”
“Seriously, Jase. You’ve already done enough! Breakfast, homemade valentines, streamers…”
“Here,” he said, placing a small box in my hand.
“Jase—”
“It’s nothing. Just open it.”
The small velvet box creaked as I opened it. My hand pressed to my mouth as I stared at the locket that hung from a silver chain, Marty’s birth stone dangled from the chain.
“Open it,” Jason said, adjusting his glasses, a wide grin on his handsome face.
The vintage locket opened easily. Inside was a picture of Marty and a simple note that said. “We love you. Happy Valentine’s Day.”
“I love it,” I said, wrapping my arms around Jason’s neck, nuzzling my lips against his warm skin.
“Good.” Jason’s voice was soft and loving as he stroked my back.
“I have bad news, though.” I pulled away from him, looking back at the locket.
“What’s that?” His brow furrowed.
“This side… it’s not going to work.” I said, pointing at the small note inside the locket.
“What do you mean?” He asked, “Why not?”
I had absolutely no poker face, but I did my best to stay serious as I removed the envelope from my pocket.
“Here.” I said.
Confusion remained on Jason’s face as he opened the envelope. When he removed the ultrasound picture, his eyes widened and his chest heaved.
“You’re… you mean you’re…pregnant?”
I nodded, tears welling in my eyes. “We’re pregnant. So, I’m afraid we’ll need that space in the locket…for his or her picture.”
“Oh my god, Haddie,” he said, placing his hand on my abdomen. “I can’t believe it.”
“Are you happy?”
“Are you kidding me? I’m… I’m… I can’t even form the words right now. That’s how awesome I feel.”
“Good,” I said, a satisfied grin.
“How far along?”
“Just eight weeks. I didn’t want to say anything until I knew for sure.”
Marty wandered back to the couch, hoisting himself up to Jason’s lap.
“Hopefully Mr. Marty Pants won’t mind sharing the spotlight.”
Jason shook his head, “He’s a champ. He’ll be just fine.” Jason placed a small kiss on the top of Marty’s head. “Won’t you, big brother?”
“Vaaa-tine!”
“That’s right, buddy. Mommy just gave us the best Valentine ever.” He turned to me. “Seriously. The best ever.”
I have always been fascinated with books—-ever since I was a little girl sitting in front of my record player, following along with my huge 12×12 storybooks.
I love books—everything about them. I love reading them, being surrounded by them in bookstores and libraries, and most recently, writing some of my own.
“Bouquet Toss” is available as an e-book and paperback on Amazon.com. It is a story that is very close to my heart, one that was very cathartic to write and has opened me up to all sorts of writing possibilities.
“Champagne Toast” is a companion book to Bouquet Toss and was released on January 8th and is also available as an e-book and paperback through amazon.

Blog Tour: Unwanted Stars by Melissa Brown (review, playlist, giveaway)

Title: Unwanted Stars
Author: Melissa Brown
 Release Date: Feb 3rd, 2014

It’s funny how the tiniest of things can change your life… an invitation, a simple kiss goodnight, a matchbook…
Auden Kelly is in need of a change.
She’s trading in her nine-to-five sales job for the adventure of a lifetime: a one year contract with a European tour company.
For one full year, Auden will get paid to see the world. What could be better? Her brother gives her a journal, instructing her to document all of her adventures as she travels from country to country. And that’s exactly what she does.
When a mysterious stranger enters her life, however, everything changes: her expectations, her priorities and her view of the world. And nothing for Auden will ever be the same.
Note: Although these books are part of a series, they do not need to be read in order

Adventure takes on a whole new meaning in Melissa Brown’s Unwanted Stars.
Attractive settings, a handsome stranger, and a journey of self-discovery help create a picture perfect postcard. In this charming 5 star travel experience, Unwanted Stars proves that even though the landscape has changed Melissa Brown still retains her “Queen of Love” crown.
Travel the world. Find yourself! Sometimes easier said than done…Right?!?!
Desperately seeking her own place in this ordinary world, Auden has set her course for adventure.

Armed with her journal, a cast of thrill seeking tour guests, and the idea that there is more to life than 9 to 5, Auden learns the most important lesson of all. Love is a universal language and no matter where you go love will you.

“Everything you feel…absolutely everything. I feel it too. Please. Don’t. Doubt. That.”

To say that this journey was one of ease would be an untruth. Let’s face it, self-discovery never is. Auden’s European Adventure was not tour brochure perfect. Family truths boil to the surface and the limited stable ground that Auden is standing on crumbles to pieces. What do you when your known becomes the unknown?

“You make me feel so loved,” I said. “Even with all the craziness of my life. You’ve made everything better somehow.”

Melissa Brown has proven that love is more than four letter word. Crafting real life relationships with relatable characters her stories weave the perfect balance of angst, laughs, character growth, and just plain fun. Unwanted Stars will have you looking at the little things in life, like matchbooks and journals, in a whole new light. Part of the Love of Your Life Series, Unwanted Stars maybe read as a standalone or as the forth book of the series. If you don’t presently have Melissa marked as one of your go to authors stop what you are doing and add her to the list. You won’t want to miss a single word.

Christmas with Jason and Hadley

“I think we may have gone a little overboard,” I said, inspecting the obscene pile of gifts for Marty under the tree. It was Christmas Eve and Jason and I were spending our very first Christmas together since getting engaged. Marty’s adoption was not yet official, but to us, we were officially a family. And our excitement probably caused us to get carried away.

“Nonsense,” Jason said, pushing his black rimmed glasses higher on his nose. God, I loved him. “He needs all this stuff.”

“You think so, huh?” I asked, putting my arm around his waist.

“Absolutely. Besides, it’s all from Santa.”

“He’s only fifteen months old. He doesn’t even get the concept yet,” I said with a laugh.

Jason removed my hand from his waist, took a dramatic step back and glared at me. His hands crossed defiantly over his chest, covering the hand drawn tree on his “Griswold Family Christmas” t-shirt.

“Tsk, tsk, tsk,” he said, shaking his handsome head at me.

“What?” I asked with an innocent smile.

“It’s our Christmas. Our first real Christmas living together and everything. It’s a big deal.”

I loved how sentimental my fiance was. The little things meant a lot to Jason. He was all about the details. Which is probably why he was such a good writer.

“I’m sorry,” I said hanging my head. “You’re right, it is.”

“And that’s why,” Jason said, leaning down to crouch next to the tree, “you need this.”

He picked up a small box wrapped with a simple red ribbon.

“What did you do?” I asked, my hands covering my mouth in surprise.

“It’s not a big deal. Okay, yeah, it kind of is,” he said, standing up and placing the box in my hand.

“Wait just a minute,” I said, giving the box back to him. “I have something for you, too.”

I ran to the bedroom to retrieve his gift from my closet. The large, thin box leaned against the wall of the closet, covered in snowman wrapping paper. I’d managed to find snowmen wearing hipster glasses. Just like Jason.

Holding the heavy box in my hand, I walked back to the living room to find Jason sitting on the couch. I sat beside him and placed the large gift in front of him.

“What is this?” he asked, a child-like expression on his handsome face.

“Just a little something I made.”

“I’m intrigued,” he said.

“Open it,” I insisted.

“No way,” he said, placing the tiny ribbon-wrapped box back into the palm of my hand “you first, Haddie.”

“All right,” I said with a smile. “If you insist.”

When I opened the box, I gasped.

“It’s so beautiful,” I said, marveling at the gorgeous silver charm bracelet inside the box. I picked it up to inspect all of the charms, each one had significance and meaning. Each one was a part of our story. Hipster glasses, a tree, and ampersand symbol, Marty’s birth stone and little blue footprints.

“Jase, I just… I can’t get over how thoughtful you are. Seriously.”

“It was fun to make it. And Marty helped.”

“He did?” I asked, surprised.

“Well, he slept most of the time. But he was there,” he said with a chuckle.

“That’s enough for me.” I placed a kiss on his lips. “Thank you. This is exquisite.”

“Just like you,” he said, placing another kiss on my eager lips. My hands instinctively wrapped around his neck, pulling him closer. His tongue stroked against my top lip, asking to deepen the kiss. I happily obliged, stroking his tongue with my own. Feeling desire build within me as his hands raked through my curls.

“Wait, wait,” I said between kisses. “Your gift.”

“Later,” he said, pulling my lips back to his, pushing me into the soft cushions of the couch. He took his glasses off, placing them on the table behind the couch. Just as his fingers began to tug at the strings of my cotton pajama pants, I pushed them away.

“No, seriously. I want you to open it.”

“If you insist,” he said, putting his glasses back on as he pretended to glare at me with his gorgeous green eyes.

“Wow, this is heavy,” he said, lifting the large box so it laid flat on his lap.

“Fragile, too,” I said with a smile.

Slowly, Jason peeled at the corners of the gift. When after several seconds, he’d only revealed one corner of the box, I felt my fingers drumming against in my knee in anticipation.

“You can go a little faster,” I said, nudging him in the arm.

“Okay.”

He tore open the rest of the paper, revealing his gift. A shadow box with his book covers pinned to the cork. Surrounding the book covers were some of his favorite reviews typed up on cardstock and also pinned to the cork. He stared in awe.

“Woah,” he said before staring at it in silence for several minutes.

“Does that mean you like it?”

“Like it? No…that word doesn’t even come close. Haddie, this is the nicest gift I’ve ever received.”

“I thought we could hang it over the couch.”

“Really? Will our friends think I’ve let things go to my head?”

“Your last book was on the New York Times list, Jase. You should be proud of everything you’ve accomplished. I know I am.”

“Thanks, Haddie.”

“Merry Christmas, Jase.” I said, planting another kiss on his cheek and nuzzling into his neck. He kissed the top of my head before wrapping his arms around me. We stared at the glowing lights of the tree.

“Merry Christmas, my love. Merry Christmas.”

The Champagne Toast Book Review

I’m not sure what I love more Melissa Browns writing or her love of 80’s movies.  I was given the gift of one of the best movie scene ever (insert one large boom box and one love sick John Cusack) in The Bouquet Toss and now I am gifted with The Breakfast Club (Sweet).  Throw in a NKOTB reference and I knew that this book had “The Right Stuff”.
In the follow up to The Bouquet Toss, The Champagne Toast brings us Evan!
“Evan Maxwell and Kate Armour fell hard and fast for each other while attending college. Their once passionate and loving relationship ended when old scars eventually tore them apart. Two years after their breakup, they’re each struggling to piece together what went wrong in an attempt to move forward.

Kate, a no-nonsense bartender, must face her past while attempting to focus on her future.
Evan is stifled by his bitter heart, which threatens each and every relationship he attempts after walking away from Kate.  Will life offer them a second chance at love or are old patterns simply too hard to break.”

Starting this book I knew that I would fall in love with Evan.  When I was introduced to him in The Bouquet Toss I knew he would be hard to forget and boy was I right.  Evan is sweet, caring, loving and attentive.  Though out his relationship with Kate love grows but its not always easy.
When Kate entered the picture I knew that love was not going to be easy for these two.  After denying it they both fell for each other, hard.  I was drawn into this story.  Melissa Brown painted a picture with her words that shows love, pain and sorrow.  “Real love is the most possible thing in the world”.  Now I did find myself wanting to yell at my Kindle at multiple parts!  “Sweets. You couldn’t ignore me if you tried”.  If everything in life could be solved via a cheesy 80’s the world would be a better place but it is never that easy.
With a mix of well written characters and a believable story line Champagne Toast holds your attention from beginning to end.  Will Evan and Kate be able to fight the war that is love and come out on top…you will have to download your copy today to find out.  Melissa Brown did not disappoint with this follow up and this book would be a great add to your bookshelf.  For me this was a 5 star!
